From top philanthropists and most generous women to popular causes and charitable cities, the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020 plots the corporate donation map of India.
What has been known all along has just got reconfirmed. Wipro Founder-Chairman Azim Premji is the top most philanthropist in the country. He donated INR 22 crore per day or INR 7,904 crore in 2020. He is followed by Shiv Nadar, Founder-Chairman, HCL Technologies; Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries; Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group; and Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta Group, according to the seventh edition of EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020.
The Hurun Report includes cash and cash equivalents pledged with legally binding commitments for the preceding year from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 and the latest available corporate social responsibility (CSR) data filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India.
Philanthropy in India: Key highlights
▪ Total donations increase by 175% to INR 12,050 crore in 2020.
▪ Kumara Mangalam Birla and Anil Agarwal move into top 5.
▪ At age 37, Binny Bansal is the youngest in the list.
▪ With 36 individuals, Mumbai is home to most philanthropists, followed by New Delhi (20) and Bengaluru (10).
▪ Education is the most favoured cause followed by healthcare and disaster relief and management.
▪ With a donation of INR 47 crore, Rohini Nilekani, 61, is the most generous woman philanthropist.
▪ With a donation of INR 27 crore, Amit Chandra, 52, and Archana Chandra, 49, of ATE Chandra Foundation are the first and only professional managers to ever enter the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List.
