The Tatas have emerged as the best performers on sustainable development indicators, according to ‘BT Sustainable Development (SD) Indexan assessment of business performance in India 2009-10’. Tatas are followed by Reliance Industries, Infosys and ITC
When it comes to sustainable development issues, companies rate water resource management as the most important issue requiring urgent attention. Education, healthcare, natural resource management and climate change are the other pressing issues.
Though the public awareness on sustainable development is on the rise, it’s not being matched by real progress at the ground level in India or abroad, notes the report. BT India chairman Arun Seth told FE, It’s good that the awareness about sustainable development issues is increasing, but now we need to translate it into real action. There is need to align intent with action.
Corporate performance on sustainable development has come down since since 2008 and is lacking mostly in the areas of climate change, air pollution and solid waste management.
