After making a mark as professional managers, Indian-origin women are emerging as successful entrepreneurs in the US by dint of their hard work, support of families and an enabling business environment for women-led and minority businesses.
Today, Indian-origin women are running six of the 50 fastest-growing women-owned or led companies in North America, according to a recent survey by American Express OPEN, the small business division of American Express, and Women Presidents Organization, a network of women entrepreneurs.
The survey considered only those privately-owned businesses which had generated $500,000 in annual revenue by the first week of 2005 and reached revenues of $2 million by year-end 2009.
FE caught up with the Indian-origin women toppers of the Amex-WPO list: Sonu Ratra, president, Akraya; Priti Parikh, president, Sweta Systems; Padma Allen, president & CFO, TechnoDyne; Kiran Gill, president, Paras Environmental; Anjali Ramakumaran, CEO, Ampcus; and Ranjini Poddar, co-founder & president, Artech Information.
