Power to the people

Power pinching in the past three years has saved the country electricity worth one ultra mega power plant, or 5,000 mw. What’s more, the country’s avoided power capacity addition has been doubling annually over the past three years, from approximately 600 mw to 1,500 mw to 2,900 mw. The target in the 11th Plan is to save 10,000 mw!

Simply put, the country is getting energy efficient. Consumer behaviour and government propelling have resulted in smart electrical fittings, household appliances, electronic gadgets, automobiles and green buildings.

For instance, saving on electricity costs is motivation enough for consumers to even pay more for a product that is energy efficient. LG Electronics India MD Moon B Shin says about 25% of their air-conditioner sales come from five-star rated units, which is the highest on a scale of 1-5. The star-rated products save up to 37% energy, he adds. Samsung India deputy managing director Ravinder Zutshi agrees, “Increasingly consumers are going in for star-rated, energy efficient products. People are willing to pay a premium, if need be, to save energy costs in the long run.”
